Family time: anime movies to watch with your parents

I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but it’s a full autumn in Romania. Which means it’s cold, rainy and all I want to do is stay inside and not go to work.

As I was chatting with my mom on Skype, I realised that it would be a great time to just take her, curl up in bed and watch a cute anime movie. I can’t do that, so why won’t you?

Family-friendly anime movies are a cute way to introduce your parents to those huge-ass-eyed cartoons you always watch whenever you have to productive.

So why don’t you do something cute with your mom today? Make some tea or hot chocolate, take her and snuggle in bed. And you can choose what to watch from the list below.

Tokyo Godfathers

This movie has some sort of Disney magic to it. It’s the story of three homeless people who find an abandoned baby on the streets and the situations they have to go through in order to find its mommy. It’s a really touching story that got me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Wolf Children

Wolf-Children

Another family-oriented movie, it tells the story of a single mom who is determined to raise her two half-human half-wolf children. And she does a damn well job. It’s also a story of adolescence, growing up and choosing a path. Really really good one here. Might even get a few tears from you.

The Girl who Leapt through Time

Imagine watching a Disney movie without a princess. This is The Girl who Leapt through Time. I wrote a review a looong time ago here in case you wanna read it (it sucks), but the movie is actually really good, especially for a light afternoon. Give it a try, in case you didn’t already. It’s worth it.

Howl’s Moving Castle

I’m pretty damn sure you all know about this movie, probably watched it more than one time. But, if I’d have to choose my favourite out of all Miyazaki’s movies to watch with my parents, this would be it. (and also Spirited Away). But Howl’s Moving Castle is more dynamic and engaging that other Studio Ghibli works and it’s also got a bad-ass written story with badass characters. (Calcifer no. 1 fangirl in here)

Hotarubi no Mori e

No, this is not Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli. It’s Takahiro Omori and Brains-Base. Anyhow. What makes this movie so good is its simplicity. A girl meets a magical Gin, a spirit of the forest and comes back every summer so they could spend time together. However, he will die if he touches a human. It’s a story about coming of age and impossible romance. You will definitely enjoy it.

I wanted to also insert the Boku no Pico joke, but I realized it’s gotten too old.

What would you/did you watch with your family?
